Raw As Dairy, Real As Milk: The Farmer General Speaks With Kurt Timmermeister

Posted on April 1st, 2011

Kurt Timmermeister has made me feel better about urban farmer’s markets. Or, at least, about the following decidedly controversial opinion that I’ve privately held for some time now: I am not sure that I like them.

When I first thought to contact him for an interview, having read the story of his farm in Culture magazine, having chuckled over his wry and thoughtful journal entries on his own website, and, having longed for his Dinah cheese (a close friend is a cheesemonger, and cannot say enough good things about its entrancingly creamy innards), I worried. I fretted. I wrote an essay about the fretting, last week, and pondered what I might possibly ask of someone, on the subject of farming, as a person who failed to grow tomatoes in a backyard garden last summer.

Ask Rennie, Vol. 3: Birds, Bees, and Knees?

Posted on March 23rd, 2011

Dear Rennie,

Every year, Mabel Bywater hosts this insufferable garden party to mark the beginning of spring. She insists on shipping a pair of ‘period dress appropriate’ bloomers along with each invitation, and this year, between the advanced honey badger threat, and my best dress being one that’s cut close to the knee, I just don’t see the sense in wearing them. I’m going with pants.

But, what should I bring for a covered dish? I can only make so many decisions surrounding this thing. Your advice would be most appreciated.

Sincerely Yours,
Knees Not Out Today Thanks in Yonkers

The Maple Coast: Lost Pies, Vol. 3

Posted on March 18th, 2011

Despite living on the West Coast, as a native New Englander, March will always see something rise in my blood to match the hidden surge of sap in maple trees on a far-off coast. Here, in Portland, the seasons are two: raining, or not-raining. Lost to us is the subtle magic of maple sugaring season, and that first night that has the breath of blossom intermingled with the chill of the lingering snow.

Ask Rennie Vol. 2: Electric Pickle Boogaloo

Posted on March 14th, 2011

Dear Rennie,

As a novice pickler, I find myself at a loss of where to source the right sort of crock. Stoneware? Fiestaware? Does Le Crueset make an appropriate version? A householding neighbor suggested making my own, but, I can’t seem to find that back issue of ReadyMade. Help!

Yours truly,
